In a tumultuous turn of events, Lahore’s GPO Chowk became a battleground as a protest rally organized by lawyers escalated into clashes with riot police outside the Lahore High Court (LHC).
The lawyers, including members of the Lahore High Court Bar Association (LHCBA), sought to enter the high court premises to protest against the filing of a terror case against fellow lawyers and the relocation of a court.
Riot police responded by baton-charging, firing tear gas, and using water cannons to disperse the protesters, resulting in injuries and arrests among the lawyers, as well as bystanders and members of the press.
Negotiations between the police and lawyers have thus far failed to resolve the standoff.
Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz intervened, directing the Inspector General to refrain from using force against the lawyers and urging both sides to seek an amicable resolution to prevent further confrontation.
LHCBA President Asad Butt vowed to continue the protest until their demands, including the withdrawal of the court division notification and dismissal of cases against lawyers, are met.
The Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) condemned the police’s actions and called on Chief Justice of Pakistan Qazi Faez Isa to intervene. The SCBA demanded medical attention for the injured and the immediate release of detained lawyers.
Meanwhile, the Pakistan Bar Council announced a nationwide strike and protest in solidarity with the lawyers.
The situation at GPO Chowk remained tense, with roads leading to the LHC closed off to prevent further escalation. Riot police continued to disperse protesters attempting to breach the court premises.
According to a senior superintendent of police, the decision to use force was prompted by the protesters’ aggression towards law enforcement personnel.
